It's almost time for spring tball, baseball, and softball in Williamson County, and we are ready for it! If you follow me on Instagram, you would have already seen that we went on a little baseball shopping excursion last week to Play It Again Sports ~ Brentwood. We got stocked up on great quality, gently used baseball gear for our son and saved ourselves a ton of money! Before I tell you about how we did that, let me take you back to last year's shopping trip.

2021 was my son's first year playing tball in a local league - we did both spring and fall seasons and he absolutely loved it. But being newbie sports parents, we had no clue where to shop for all the gear he would need or how much it would cost. Equipped with our list of necessary items from the head of his league, we set out to the nearest big name sporting goods store. Here's how that shopping trip broke down:

  • Batting helmet: $40
  • Tball bat: $40
  • Baseball glove: $35
  • Baseball cleats: $40
  • Bag: $24

Total: $179. (And that is NOT including the equipment my husband bought for himself as the head coach.)

I know sporting equipment, especially good quality equipment, is expensive. Still, to spend $180 for items that will only last us a season or two was a pretty hard hit to the wallet. By the end of the fall tball season, my son had almost completely grown out of his brand new cleats and baseball glove.

The Savings

When we signed up for coach's pitch this year, we knew we needed to take a different approach. If our son wants to do baseball every year, then buying brand new items each season would add up FAST.

This time, we were going to be smart shoppers. Instead of dropping $180 dollars on all new gear to fit our growing child, we headed over to Play It Again Sports ~ Brentwood. They knew exactly what we needed when we told them we were moving from tball to coach’s pitch - especially in bats - and found us a USA Baseball Certified Bat (USABat). The sales associate then took the time to find the correct size and weight that would help develop my son’s swing.

After trading in last year’s tball bat, cleats, and glove that no longer fit we earned $25 store credit towards his new gear. Luckily, his helmet still fits him, and his bag will hopefully last us a few years, so we did not have to replace those. Still, with the new-to-us gear, here's how THAT shopping trip broke down:

  • Baseball bat: $40 (a brand new baseball bat would have been $80)
  • Cleats: $14
  • Glove: $10

Total: $64. PLUS, we saved an additional 20% on their current in-store promotion on baseball, tball, and softball cleats and helmet (going on through February 27th).

Subtract the $25 credit from our trade-ins and 20% off the cleats, and our grand total comes to $31.20. Even if we had needed to buy a gently used batting helmet, our total still would have landed under $50.

We will never again make the mistake of buying brand new gear that will only be used for one season (or less)! The best part about Play It Again Sports ~ Brentwood is that we can even return the gently used items we purchased THIS year and exchange them for next year's purchases. We will be trading in to trade-up every year from now on.
